LEAD FREE CENTRIFUGAL CASTING ALLOYS

Lead free alloys are more expensive than those with a high proportion of lead, however because they are of lower density they are not as expensive as they first appear. Lead free alloys are essential for items involving food and drink and are best used for items that are going to be handled (without painting or plating). For centrifugal casting Pewters have a good balance between flow, detail, shrinkage resistance and strength. Items that would need to be plated in whitemetal can be polished to a long lasting bright finish. Lead free pewter is a healthier option for you or your employees and your final product can have increased value. Being lighter will reduce carriage costs on your finished product. As with all casting alloys best results are obtained by varying the casting temperature to suit the bulk, lowest temperatures for bulky items and highest for thin sections, remember also that bulky items will require longer spin times to ensure all the metal has solidified before the machine is stopped. PEWTER S * Pouring 270 - 315 C 0.5% Cu
This composition is a good general alloy for a wide variety of castings particularly suitable for thinner sectioned items which require greater flow, BS5140 (broad description) ABPC

PEWTER M Pouring 270 - 315 C 1% Cu
This is an excellent composition for a wide variety of castings fairly forgiving of incorrect temperature. BS5140 ABPC

PEWTER L2 * Pouring 270 - 315 C We developed this pewter to have an extended freezing range without increasing the working temperature and results in a very useful casting alloy particularly good for overcoming porosity problems, gives a very good surface finish. Slightly softer than the other compositions. This alloy contains bismuth.

PEWTER E Pouring 270 - 310 C
Pewter alloys are sometimes too brittle to allow the sort of bending required in some castings so this special composition has been designed to be soft and malleable figures can be bent to position whilst giving trouble free casting

CARN XD1 * Pouring 240 - 285 C
This lead free 'whitemetal' gives excellent replication of detail with a whitemetal matt finish. The low operating temperature makes it particularly good for RTV moulds. It has a long pasty range is hard and rather brittle in thin sections. Suitable for relatively small detailed items which are not going to be bent.
